Substance Use Disorders
Substance Use Disorders are complex conditions characterized by an unhealthy pattern of substance use leading to significant impairment in physical, emotional, and social functioning. Alcohol addiction, cocaine addiction and other substance abuse challenges are faced by millions worldwide, but with the right plan for substance use disorder treatment and support, recovery is always possible.
In addition to alcohol abuse and cocaine abuse, other substance use disorders include cannabis abuse and addictive use of methamphetamines and other stimulants, opioids and prescription medication.
Dr. Zorica Filipovic-Jewell’s approach to treating substance use disorders is compassionate and nonjudgmental. She will first assess if a patient is appropriate for an outpatient level of care, or if more intense treatment is necessary. Her approach in helping patients with Substance Use Disorder includes:
- Comprehensive assessment with detailed review of substance use history, medical history, and review of social circumstances and environment. By identifying contributing factors and coexisting conditions, Dr. Filipovic-Jewell creates a treatment plan that is both effective and personalized and is focused on addressing both physical and emotional aspects of recovery.
- Psychoeducation and psychotherapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and supportive psychotherapy to address underlying problems, manage triggers, and build coping skills.
- Medication-Assisted Treatment when appropriate: to help manage withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, manage symptoms of anxiety and depression when indicated which makes recovery more sustainable.
- Referral to AA, NA or specialized programs when indicated.
Some of the most common symptoms of Substance Use Disorder include:
- Physical Symptoms: Changes in appetite or sleep patterns, frequent illnesses, unexplained weight fluctuations, and signs of intoxication or withdrawal such as sweating, shaking, or nausea.
- Psychological Symptoms: Heightened anxiety, mood swings, periods of depression, and difficulty concentrating or remembering things.
- Behavioral Symptoms: Neglecting responsibilities at work, or home, withdrawing from social activities, dishonesty about substance use, and engaging in risky behaviors.
Recovery is a collaborative process. Dr. Zorica Filipovic-Jewell offers support in this process. In addition to treatment, she will provide resources and education to empower you and your loved ones to sustain a long-term recovery.
