Depression Therapy

Man appearing to be in despair

Depressive disorders, commonly referred to as depression, are mood disorders that cause persistent sadness, loss of interest, and changes in how a person thinks, feels, and functions. Depression affects each person differently and can create emotional, physical, and behavioral symptoms that interfere with daily life.

Common depressive disorders include major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder, postpartum depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and depression that co-occurs with anxiety, ADHD, chronic illness, substance use, or other conditions.

Common symptoms of depression are:

  • Persistent sadness
  • Loss of interest in hobbies or activities
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Changes in sleep, including insomnia or oversleeping
  • Appetite or weight changes
  • Fatigue
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  • Suicidal thoughts

If suicidal thoughts are active or feel urgent, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 988, or call 911. Or go to the nearest emergency room immediately—help is available for you.

Dr. Filipovic-Jewell approaches depression treatment with compassion, clinical care, and a clear understanding that symptoms may affect every part of life. Her evaluation includes a clinical interview, review of medical history, family history and, when appropriate, lab and other medical testing to rule out medical causes of depressive symptoms.

Once a depressive disorder is diagnosed, treatment may include psychoeducation, psychotherapy, medication management with antidepressants when indicated, and support for sleep problems. Therapy may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), emotionally focused therapy (EFT), internal family systems (IFS) therapy, relaxation techniques, or other approaches based on the patient’s symptoms and goals.

Lifestyle and behavioral strategies are also important in depression treatment. Dr. Filipovic-Jewell helps patients understand how healthy routines, regular movement, balanced nutrition, mindfulness practices, and sleep support can help manage depressive symptoms.

Depression can make simple tasks feel overwhelming, but recovery is possible. Effective treatment helps many adults experience relief and begin functioning with greater stability, energy, and confidence.
