Anxiety Disorder Therapy

Anxious male patient consulting his therapist

Fear is a natural response to an immediate threat. Anxiety is different. Symptoms often involve ongoing worry, unease, or fear about future events, uncertainty, or even situations that may not present immediate danger. When anxiety becomes persistent, overwhelming, or disruptive, it may indicate an anxiety disorder.

Dr. Filipovic-Jewell provides a comprehensive assessment for adults experiencing anxiety symptoms. This includes a diagnostic clinical interview, a review of medical history, and, when appropriate, laboratory testing to rule out medical causes that may contribute to anxiety.

After diagnosis, treatment is tailored to the patient’s symptoms, needs, and goals. Treatment may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), other therapeutic approaches, medication management when appropriate, support for sleep problems, and lifestyle or stress-management strategies such as mindfulness and relaxation techniques.

Common Anxiety Disorders:

Generalized anxiety disorder [GAD]: Characterized by persistent worry about various aspects of life, often without a specific cause, sleep problems, muscle tension, fatigue, nausea, or difficulty concentrating.

Panic disorder: Sudden, repeated episodes of intense fear, often accompanied by chest pain, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, sweating, headache, or nausea.

Social anxiety disorder: Intense fear of judgment or embarrassment in social situations, fear of interacting or talking with strangers, and avoiding social contact.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder [OCD]: Unwanted intrusive thoughts, known as obsessions, and repetitive behaviors, known as compulsions, performed to alleviate distress. Common obsessions: fear of contamination or dirt, needing things to be orderly and balanced, aggressive thoughts about losing control and harming others, unwanted thoughts, including aggression, or sexual or religious subjects.

Phobias: Extreme fear of specific objects, situations, or environments, such as flying, heights, or animals.
