Substance Use Disorder Treatment

Substance use disorders are complex conditions characterized by an unhealthy pattern of substance use leading to significant impairment in physical, emotional, and social functioning. Alcohol addiction, cocaine addiction and other substance abuse challenges are faced by millions worldwide. With the right substance use disorder treatment and support, recovery is possible.

In addition to alcohol abuse and cocaine abuse, other substance use disorders include cannabis abuse and addictive use of methamphetamines and other stimulants, opioids and prescription medication.

Dr. Zorica Filipovic-Jewell’s approach to treating substance use disorders is compassionate and nonjudgmental. She first assesses whether a patient is appropriate for outpatient care or whether a more intensive level of treatment is necessary.

Her approach in helping patients with substance use disorder includes:

  • Comprehensive assessment: A detailed review of substance use history, medical history, social circumstances, and environment. By identifying contributing factors and coexisting conditions, Dr. Filipovic-Jewell creates an effective, personalized treatment plan focused on both the physical and emotional aspects of recovery.
  • Psychoeducation and psychotherapy: Cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and supportive psychotherapy to address underlying problems, manage triggers, and build coping skills.
  • Medication-assisted treatment when appropriate: Medication may help manage withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, and address anxiety or depression when indicated, which helps make recovery more sustainable.
  • Referral when indicated: Referral to AA, NA, or specialized substance abuse treatment programs when a higher or more structured level of support is needed.

Some of the most common symptoms of substance use disorder include:

  • Physical Symptoms: Changes in appetite or sleep patterns, frequent illnesses, unexplained weight fluctuations, and signs of intoxication or withdrawal such as sweating, shaking, or nausea.
  • Psychological Symptoms: Heightened anxiety, mood swings, periods of depression, and difficulty concentrating or remembering things.
  • Behavioral Symptoms: Neglecting responsibilities at work or home, withdrawing from social activities, dishonesty about substance use, and engaging in risky behaviors.

Recovery is a collaborative process. Dr. Filipovic-Jewell provides treatment, support, resources, and education to help patients and their loved ones work toward long-term recovery.
