Sleep disorders include a wide range of conditions that disrupt normal sleep patterns, leaving individuals feeling fatigued, irritable, or unable to function effectively during the day.

Common types of sleep disorders include:

  • Insomnia: Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early.
  • Sleep Apnea: Interrupted breathing during sleep caused by obstruction in the airway or brain disorders.
  • Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS): Uncomfortable sensations in the legs that create an irresistible urge to move them.
  • Narcolepsy: Sudden and uncontrollable episodes of sleep during the day.
  • Circadian Rhythm Disorders: Misalignment between internal clock and external cues (jetlag or shift work sleep disorder).
  • Other sleep disorders: Bruxism, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Night Terrors, Parasomnias, Sleep paralysis.

In approaching patients with Sleep Disorders, Dr. Zorica Filipovic-Jewell considers unique circumstances and challenges of each patient. She will initially conduct a comprehensive clinical evaluation through the clinical interview and a review of sleep patterns, medical history, lifestyle, and any coexisting conditions that may be contributing to sleep challenges.

Dr. Zorica Filipovic-Jewell assists patients with Sleep Disorder through sleep hygiene recommendations, utilization of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) when appropriate to address negative thought patterns related to sleep, careful use of medications when appropriate, or referrals to other specialists to treat underlying medical disorders when necessary.

If you have chronic sleep problems, schedule a consultation. Sleep is a very important factor in maintaining both mental and physical health.
