Eating disorders can be serious medical conditions that impact both physical and mental health. Individuals can experience cognitive disturbances related to food, eating habits, body weight, and shape, as well as maladaptive eating behaviors. Such symptoms can have significant repercussions on overall health, emotional well-being, and the capacity to perform essential functions in daily life.

Common Eating Disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED).

Eating disorders often require a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing psychiatric care, therapy, nutritional counseling, and occasionally medical intervention. Comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis with risk assessments are essential.

Dr. Zorica Filipovic-Jewell’s approach is compassionate and nonjudgemental. She will first assess if a patient is appropriate for an outpatient level of care, or if more intense treatment is required. Her approach in helping patients with Eating Disorder includes:

  • Comprehensive clinical evaluation through a thorough clinical interview with the review of medical history and lab parameters to assess risk factors
  • Psychoeducation about eating disorders and identifying the thought patterns that are involved
  • Psychotherapy that focuses on addressing these thought patterns and building healthier coping mechanisms
  • Medication management for mood and anxiety
  • Coordination with nutritionists and primary care providers
  • Ongoing support for relapse prevention and long-term recovery
  • Referral to a higher level of care, when indicated.

Common warning signs of Eating Disorder:

  • Excessive focus on food, weight, calories, or body image
  • Noticeable weight fluctuations
  • Adhering to strict dietary rules
  • Compulsive physical activity
  • Physical symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, digestive issues, and irregular or absent periods. Generalized weakness.
